Appointed Judge — Mark Bagally

The appointed judge for the 2024 Eltham Art Show is current President of the Victorian Artists Society (VAS), Mark Bagally.

Mark is an experienced full-time artist from the Surf Coast of Victoria and for the past two years has been the head exhibitions curator for the VAS. He is currently the National Vice President of the Australian Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).

Mark has sound practical knowledge of 3D art by virtue of his curating experience at the VAS.

Assistant Judge — Gay Cuthbert

Paul Cacioli

Appointed Curator — Paul Cacioli

Paul did his post- doctorate at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, working on anti-anaphylactic drugs. He was a research fellow at La Trobe University working on anti-cancer drugs and then moved to CSIRO where he joined the applied polymer group.

After CSIRO, Paul spent 10 years in Malaysia with Ansell, one year in Sri Lanka and three years in America. On his return home, he worked in global medical marketing and R&D for prominent and start-up businesses.

Paul started blacksmithing as a hobby over 18 years ago and has worked with other media, such as papier mâché, clay and glass, but found that creating art out of steel using a hammer and anvil challenging and exciting.

He began his journey in blacksmithing by taking a beginner’s course with Oskar Huecherig at Mont Delancey and after the course he returned each Sunday to learn more. Paul is now skilled in both traditional and modern methods of blacksmithing but still thinks he has a lot to learn.

Paul belongs to the Wandin Blacksmiths at Mont Delancey Homestead and curates the annual exhibition “Art on the Hill” there in September each year. Over the past 10 years he has also been teaching basic blacksmithing.

Paul is a member of the Association of Sculptors of Victoria (ASV) and of the Victorian Artists Society and the Contemporary Artists Society.

Paul has been the ASV’s coordinator for the sculpture exhibition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show for over 6 years.

Paul has been awarded several prizes for his work.

John Paine & Woodcraft-Manningham

Woodcraft Manningham is a group of interested men and women woodworkers who will show you how to do it. We are a hands-on club, with a large well-equipped workshop.Our groups are:

• Box making
• Carving
• Toy making
• Wood turning

Ellen Jenkins — Clay

Saturday 17 August from 10.00am to 3.00pm

Ellen Jenkins is a member of the Diamond Valley Arts Society and the Association of Victorian Sculptors.

“I have been working with clay for about nine years now. Hand building with clay is a wonderful 3D experience and the possibilities are endless. I love using life models where I can just wait for inspiration as to whether I work on a bust or full body pose. I also love to make small animals and characters which cause a laugh or smile.”

Carmel Ritchie — Mosaic

Saturday 17 August from 10.00am to 3.00pm

I have a powerful love of nature and through it, I can often find deep solitude. I have found that art soothes yet stimulates the soul and mind in ways that other educational subjects do not.

I have explored various mediums by designing hanging weavings, paintings, mosaics and sculpture. I have realised a love of sculpture, carving and shaping limestone into smooth curved shapes.
